About Josh
My wife and I have been in Albany for over 15 years, and both of our kids have gone through Albany Schools. We’re so glad that we made Albany our home.
I come from a family of educators. My mother was speech pathologist working with students with disabilities. My aunt worked in Washington, DC in the Department of Education in the Office of Special Education Projects. I started my working career as a math teacher in Northern Alabama, before migrating to Washington DC, where I worked at the University of Maryland doing research on the use of technology by students with disabilities. I later worked on Capitol Hill for an educational non-profit.
Afterwards, I moved to the private sector, working in technology for The Gap, The RealReal, and a telehealth startup focused on women’s health, Evernow.
Since COVID, I’ve been focused on things that are more meaningful to me personally. It is why I worked on Measure L to help raise funds for our educational facilities. It is why I joined the Albany School Board.
My Priorities
Finances
In these challenging economic times, it is critical that we are financially disciplined. Given the fiscal challenges we face, including lost revenue from Golden Gate Fields, we must manage our books, so that we can maintain control of our district.
Facilities
I worked on the Measure L campaign, raising $63+M in bonds, which highlighted the need to invest in our facilities. All our kids need to have safe, modern environments that are conducive to learning.
Equity & Achievement
Albany is a strong school district, but there are kids who are struggling. In our District, 1 in 4 kids are not at standard for reading/language arts and 1 in 3 are not at standard for math. In a community where education is a value, we can do better— particularly with our historically marginalized groups. We’re seeing some recent progress for those groups in reading in particular, and I want to help continue that trend.
